Location: DrawTogether Studio // The DrawTogether Studio is a new creative community space located on the border of Emeryville and Oakland, CA. 5621 Lowell Street, Unit P (as in Pencil), Emeryville, CA 94608 About the Workshop // This workshop is for the adventurous book artist interested in exploring book forms that are less traditional and more sculptural in nature. Because each of these bindings work with single sheets of paper – as opposed to folded stacks – these structures are surprisingly simple to create & allow for many kinds of content. In the workshop you’ll learn three different bindings by making mockups using blank or already decorated papers. (Feel free to bring materials to use if you have a great idea already brewing.) This is a ‘form’ class, meaning we will concentrate mostly on learning how to craft these three structures, as opposed to focusing on what the content of the form will contain. You’ll leave with three samples plus the knowledge to be able to take the structures and expand upon it in your own practice in the future. We’ll begin by learning two variations of a Flag book designed by Hedi Kyle. Then move on to the dragon scale binding, a traditional Chinese binding which dates as far back as the Tang Dynasty. Finally, we’ll experiment with the Turkish map fold which also allows for so many fun sculptural applications. Open to absolute beginners, practicing artists, designers, makers & anyone who likes books… Materials Fees, Scholarships, Cancellations, etc... // A $15 fee is included in the price of the workshop to help offset the costs of paper, glue & book board. Also, each student will receive a bone folder to keep. All supplies are provided but you are more than welcome to bring papers or materials from home if you want to experiment with specific materials. . . . . .
